“I came not to send peace on earth, but a sword.” {#Mt 10:34} The Christian will be sure to make enemies. It will be one of his objects to make none; but if to do the right, and to believe the true, should cause him to lose every earthly friend, he will count it but a small loss, since his great Friend in heaven will be yet more friendly, and reveal himself to him more graciously than ever. O ye who have taken up his cross, know ye not what your Master said? “I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother; and a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.” Christ is the great Peacemaker; but before peace, he … Read entire article »

“The life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God.” {#Ga 2:20} When the Lord in mercy passed by and saw us in our blood, he first of all said, “Live”; and this he did first, because life is one of the absolutely essential things in spiritual matters, and until it be bestowed we are incapable of partaking in the things of the kingdom. Now the life which grace confers upon the saints at the moment of their quickening is none other than the life of Christ, which, like the sap from the stem, runs into us, the branches, and establishes a living connection between our souls and Jesus. Faith is the grace which perceives this union, having proceeded from it as … Read entire article »

“And the LORD shall guide thee continually.” {#Isa 58:11} “The Lord shall guide thee.” Not an angel, but JEHOVAH shall guide thee. He said he would not go through the wilderness before his people, an angel should go before them to lead them in the way; but Moses said, “If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.” Christian, God has not left you in your earthly pilgrimage to an angel’s guidance: he himself leads the van. You may not see the cloudy, fiery pillar, but Jehovah will never forsake you. Notice the word shall—” The Lord shall guide thee.” How certain this makes it! How sure it is that God will not forsake us! His precious “shalls” and “wills” are better than men’s … Read entire article »

“Can the rush grow up without mire?” {#Job 8:11} The rush is spongy and hollow, and even so is a hypocrite; there is no substance or stability in him. It is shaken to and fro in every wind just as formalists yield to every influence; for this reason the rush is not broken by the tempest, neither are hypocrites troubled with persecution. I would not willingly be a deceiver or be deceived; perhaps the text for this day may help me to try myself whether I be a hypocrite or not. The rush by nature lives in water, and owes its very existence to the mire and moisture wherein it has taken root; let the mire become dry, and the rush withers very quickly. Its greenness is … Read entire article »

Ten Questions About Salvation
Ten Questions about Salvation 1. What Is salvation? Salvation is a term used to refer to the change of state. Prior to salvation men are lost and dead in trespasses and sin. After salvation men are made alive in Christ (Ephesians 2:1). This transformation from death to life changes ones ability to understand and commune with God (1 John 1:7). The lost are said to be spiritually dead and blind to the truth (John 3:3). The saved are spiritually reborn to new life in Christ, and now have fellowship with Him. 2. Who Needs Salvation? Everyone needs salvation because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). This does not mean that everyone is as bad as he\she could be. Some people are very moral by the world’s standard. … Read entire article »
James Smith on Sin
More dreadful than Hell! (James Smith, “He Gives Grace to the Humble” 1859) “Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” Romans 7:24 The godly man has a deep sense of the evil of sin. He looks upon sin as the bitter root, from which springs . . . all the woes and wars, all the sadness and sorrow, all the pains and pollution, all the misery and madness, and all the torment and terror –to be found in God’s universe! He regards sin as that abominable thing which God hates! It is to him a loathsome object; and a subject fraught with all that is base, degrading, and horrible. He looks at sin as more dreadful than Hell! Indeed, he considers sin to be the evilof all evils, and considers that … Read entire article »
