God’s Judgment upon Adam

“Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: ‘Cursed [is] the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat [of] it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you [are], And to dust you shall return.’” (Genesis 3:17-19 NKJV)

Have you ever wondered how a dandelion can take root and grow in the little cracks in your sidewalk? Well here is the reason. Its all part of the judgment God laid upon Adam. Thorns and thistles it will bring forth, but food will grow only by the sweat of your face.

Again, we need to remember that this judgment is also for our ultimate good. It is the harshness of this world that causes us to long for another.

Work is a good thing. It gives us something to do. Remember God put Adam in the garden to tend it (Gen 2.15). No doubt tending the garden in Eden was not something to dread, but now everything is hard.

However, this is not the greater part of the curse. That would be death. Back to the ground we must go. This is not annihilation, but the destruction of the body, a stark reminder of our frailty.

We all must die someday. What is important is that we don’t die the second death. “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8 NKJV) “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” (Revelation 2:11 NKJV)

Please evaluate your life now while you still can. If you find you are lacking, then repent of sin, turn to God, and fear death no longer. Amen.
