A Wonderful Plan
“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, ‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: ‘I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and [I know] the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but [are] a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw [some] of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.’” (Revelation 2:8-11 NKJV)
One of the popular evangelism techniques says, “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.” The impression this gives is that if you will come to Christ He will make everything better for you.
This is the classic bait and switch technique for some of you will be thrown into prison until you die. During that tribulation you must remain faithful to receive the crown of life. You must be one who overcomes then you shall not be hurt by the second death.
My dear friend, evangelism is a tricky thing. Do not be discouraged, but labor to lead people into truth for only it can set the sinner free (John 8:32). All believers want to see loved ones saved, but allowing your own desires to distort the truth will only defeat your wishes. Your loved ones need to understand they must die to self, take up their cross and follow Jesus.
A salesperson is taught to work on the emotions of their client. They never want to use the word think because they might do that and realize what you are selling is not so special. Unfortunately, some use sales techniques when presenting the gospel, and as the buyer sometimes experiences buyer’s remorse so too the would-be Christian.
If you have been lead to Christ with the promise of smooth sailing, and now find a lack of peace with God, take time to test the reality of your faith. Do you want to be free of your sin as much as you want to be pardoned for your sin? Do you really hunger and thirst for righteousness? Do you commune with God really? or do you just go through the motions?
Listen, God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezk. 33:11). He does have a wonderful plan for your life. However, the plan includes suffering and sacrifice. Believers are to present their bodies as living sacrifices as part of their reasonable spiritual duties (Rom 12:1-2). In addition, all who desire to live Godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution (2 Tim. 3:12).
Therefore, trust in Christ. There is a promise of future bliss, but that is in heaven. Today you may have a peace that passes understanding, but that will not come without self-denial.
