Oaths Forbidden
“But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and [your] nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.” (James 5:12 AV) cp. Matt 5:33-37
James is not talking about a legal oath made like a Nasserite vow, or some other commitment made to the Lord in faith. No, the practice he refers to is the rash claim to truth at the expense of the Lord’s name.
It was common for the Jews to validate their lies by swearing by this thing or that. This was a grievous sin tantamount to taking the Lord’s name in vain. We know that the Lord will not hold a man guiltless who takes His name in vain (Deut 5:11).
What prompts such oaths? When a person is in the habit of not telling the truth and or given to exaggerations, he/she will up the bet to validate their lies. “Surely they will not think I lie if I swear by the Lord’s name.” This is particularly sinful as it claims the Lord’s participation in a sin.
Therefore, James implores his readers to speak the truth—“let your yes be yes and your no be no.” My dear friends we should be of such character that our word is good enough. If you have been given to exaggerations, repent and begin to establish a walk of integrity.
Do not be surprised if you discover that people do not believe everything you say. Remember, they have heard you exaggerate for some time now. It will take a while to establish your word. However you should know this, not swearing will help to advance your testimony because an oath is a dead giveaway for exaggerations.
Many stumble into this sin seeking the approval of man. Do not seek the affirmation of men. This deadly trap ensnares the soul not resting in the Lord. Man cannot save you. Man cannot give you peace. Only the Lord can do these things. Do not anger Him with foolish lies, and do not make Him a part of your lies.
