Groaning
“For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven: if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For indeed we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened; not for that we would be unclothed, but that we would be clothed upon, that what is mortal may be swallowed up of life.” (2 Corinthians 5:1-4 ASV) “But as for me, my feet were almost gone; My steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there … Read entire article »

Perfect Love
“There is no fear in love: but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath punishment; and he that feareth is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18 ASV) “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do his commandments.” (1 John 5:1-2 ASV) Honestly apply to yourself the following tests. First, in seasons of retirement from the noise and business of the world, or during the secret hours of the Sabbath, or in your secret devotions, what are your thoughts, what is the real temper of your mind? Do you know God, commune with and delight in Him? … Read entire article »

Preaching with Authority
“Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” (Mark 1:21-22 NKJV) The scribes claimed their authority by quoting others. Their teachings focused on humanistic ceremony—this tradition and that tradition—more than the need for salvation and the glory of God. Sometimes I wonder if there is something spiritually wrong with me (sometimes there is). Perhaps you can relate. I often leave the worship service hungry, no starved, for lack of depth. I long to see Jesus, but usually only experience the persuasion of legalistic jargon. I think the problem exists because of the fear of man. Preachers can fall into the trap of needing to be … Read entire article »

Fair Play
“. . . although he had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “lord, who has believed our report? and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: “he has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes, lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them.” these things Isaiah said when he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for … Read entire article »

How Much Is it Costing You?
“7 ¶ and at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him: “because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the LORD your god, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand. 8 “were the Ethiopians and the Lubim not a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because you relied on the LORD, he delivered them into your hand. 9 “for the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong on behalf of [those] whose heart [is] loyal to him. in this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.” 10 then Asa was angry with the … Read entire article »

Listen to your Conscience
“11 ¶ now an old prophet dwelt in Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of god had done that day in Bethel; they also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king. 12 and their father said to them, “which way did he go?” for his sons had seen which way the man of god went who came from Judah. 13 then he said to his sons, “saddle the donkey for me.” so they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it, 14 and went after the man of god, and found him sitting under an oak. then he said to him, “[are] you the man of god who came from Judah?” and he said, “I … Read entire article »

Setting Up Vain Altars
Jeroboam looking to take away the kingdom from Rehoboam did run ahead of God for his own interests. Scheming to steal the hearts of the people he set up idols for the people to worship. “25 ¶ then Jeroboam built Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim, and dwelt there. also he went out from there and built Penuel. 26 and Jeroboam said in his heart, “now the kingdom may return to the house of David: 27 “if these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn back to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and go back to Rehoboam king of Judah.” 28 therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of … Read entire article »

Choose Your Counselors Carefully
“2 to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, 3 to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity; 4 to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion— 5 A wise [man] will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel” (Proverbs 1:2-5 NKJV). Rehoboam had an opportunity to live in peace with the people, but Jeroboam had made plans to take the kingdom from Rehoboam. Ahijah, the prophet had met with Jeroboam and told him that God was going to give him ten tribes (1 Kings 11:30-31). In the providence of God, Rehoboam makes a terrible decision. Choosing to follow his pride he takes the counsel of his peers over the sage advice of the elders. “4 “your … Read entire article »

Things Are Rarely As they Appear
The King of Syria was frustrated as he warred against Israel. King Jehoram stayed one step ahead of Syria’s plans by listening to Elisha’s council. Jehoram did so with such accuracy that the king of Syria began to suspect a traitor in his camp. “10 then the king of Israel sent [someone] to the place of which the man of god had told him. thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice. 11 therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, “will you not show me which of us [is] for the king of Israel?” 12 and one of his servants said, “none, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the … Read entire article »

Celebrate Your Sanctification
“28 and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, [yea] and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are: 29 that no flesh should glory before God. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: 31 that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:28-31 ASV) If we are considered as what we are in ourselves, not as we stand in Christ (as one with Him), then a thousand things may be ‘laid to our charge.’ It may be laid to our charge that we are woefully ignorant of many parts of … Read entire article »
