Peace with God

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only [that], but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:1-5 NKJV)

Now, after establishing the doctrine of righteousness by faith in Christ, Paul concerns himself with the benefits of justification.

He mentions three benefits in the opening verses of this chapter. One, believers have peace with God. Two, believers have access to the throne of grace by their Mediator. Three, believers have a cheerful hope of glory, and that in tribulation also.

A child of God is no longer a child of wrath. His relationship with God has changed. Sin, once removed, is no longer separating him from his Creator. The believer feels this new relationship in that, God is no longer a punisher but a Father. He is a friend and not an enemy.

This new relationship opens up access to God. Now the believer may commune with God through prayer and meditation. He may talk to God as a friend, and ask for help in times of distress. This relationship grows and becomes so strong that the believer longs to see Christ face to face, the hope of the glory of God.

This rejoicing is not limited to good times, but permeates every aspect of the believer’s life. Now he is even able to rejoice in tribulations. Why, because he knows all things have a purpose. He knows this because the Holy Spirit has poured out the love of God in his heart.

When people are at war, they sleep with their armor near by. Weapons are ready for battle, and they post a watch. The spiritual war with God by those outside of Christ consists of arguments, strongholds in the mind that deny God’s authority and their own guilt. Peace puts an end to that.

What is your relationship with God? Do you have peace? Do you still fight against the truth? Think about how you related to God. Is He your Father? This is a serious subject. Take some time and meditate on your relationship today. Amen.
