The Father To Whom You Speak
If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of . . . having God as his Father—J.I. Packer.
Prayer is a form of worship. That word, worship means to ascribe worth by kissing the hand or bowing the forehead to the ground. It is an act of extreme reverence.
God is certainly worthy of our worship. Our worship then must be rooted in reverential fear and adoration. Reverential fear sounds better to us, but really, it means apprehension of wrath; not to think wrath awaits us, but understanding the sovereign power of God to judge and carry out eternal punishment. This understanding when juxtaposed with grace fills us with joy and we cry Abba Father.
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption…” (Romans 8:15 NKJV) “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” (Galatians 4:6 NKJV)
An earthly father can be aloof, but not our Abba Father. He is affectionate and quick to come to our aid. “Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:9-11 NKJV)
Oh, loved ones, we have a wonderful, loving Father who holds eternity in His hands. He shapes the course of history, and forms life in the womb. The king’s heart is turned whichever way He desires (Proverbs 21:1), and this One loves you. Truly, we who have His love are blessed.
“What then shall we say to these things? If God [is] for us, who [can be] against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32 NKJV)
Cry out to your Abba today, cry to the Father and see what great things He will do.
