Proverbs

“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding, To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion— A wise [man] will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles.” (Proverbs 1:1-6 NKJV)

Did you ever wonder why God chose to make Solomon so wise? Of course we are told it was because Solomon asked for wisdom to lead the people (1 Kings 3:5-13). However, there may have been another reason, and that is for him to record for all a book full of wisdom.

Look at the declared purpose of this book: To know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity: to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

Truly the one most qualified to write such a book would be the wisest man who ever lived. Therefore, God in His infinite wisdom has by inspiration given us the writings of Solomon.

Are you wise? If so you will hear and increase learning, you will attain wise counsel. Not my counsel as I tremble at thought of commenting on such lofty things. No, I come as you to the feet of the Master hoping to gain insight to serve.

Let us be thankful that God has not left us in the dark. What would we do if He had not revealed Himself to us? Surely we would have walked proudly into the pit. Oh the thought causes me to shudder. Praise God for opening the eyes of His children, and praise God that He not only saved, but also has given us such words of wisdom. Do you understand what a glorious thing it is that God loved us and revealed Himself to us?

Are you wise? If so you will attain wise counsel. Do not forsake the reading of God’s Word. Do not despise the holy manna, but come early every morning that you may be refreshed and nourished to serve Him best.
