Sacrificial Love
“I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom [pertain] the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service [of God], and the promises; of whom [are] the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ [came], who is over all, [the] eternally blessed God. Amen.” (Romans 9:1-5 NKJV)
Paul’s compatriots were dear to him. His statement that he could wish he were accursed from Christ for them is amazing knowing how well he understood what was at stake. However, he lived as if it were true by giving of himself sacrificially so that others might be saved.
What makes a person care this much? Surely, the answer lies in his understanding of depravity. He does not see others as inferior by failing to see his own depravity. Instead, he knows well the sinfulness of his flesh, and rest wholly on the righteousness of Christ. He is thankful for mercy, and therefore, can desire it for all who need it no matter how wicked and undeserving.
We would do well to follow Paul’s example when we feel like avoiding evangelism. We need to care deeply for all souls not just the ones of which we approve. Remember, Christ died for the ungodly of whom you belonged before salvation. Amen.
