Part Two—Promote the Truth
“Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; To Titus, [mine] own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, [and] peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.” (Titus 1:1-4 AV)
In Part One, we saw how Paul was responsible in understanding his role as a servant of God. He expands on this role for not only was he a servant of God, but an apostle too.
The apostles were given the task of spreading the Gospel. Again, Paul knew his role well. He said he was an apostle according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledgement of the truth which is after godliness.
Paul’s mission had focus. He understood clearly that he was to promote the true Gospel and nothing else. Other passages confirm this goal. “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect” (1 Corinthians 1:17 AV).
His ministry was to preach truth to the lost, and to see the elect come into the faith. The truth he preached was not any truth, but the truth which is after godliness. In other words, he preached a Gospel that promoted holiness. He preached Christ that was crucified for sin and raised in righteousness. Oh how we need the pure Word of God to be heralded across this land, and around the world.
Preaching truth is always the highest task for the Church. It is not the emotional appeals to happiness and prosperity that converts sinners, but the truth that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Emotional appeals often give false assurance to those who are seeking to escape the burden of their guilt, but only repentance and faith can change the leopard’s spots and that only by the will of God.
If you have believed the truth, then make sure you promote the truth for the hope of such a person is eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began. Do I need to tell you that eternal life is worth the hardships of serving God? Surely, you long for the day when you will see Him face to face. Surely, any persecution you might face while promoting the true Gospel should be counted as joy. Let us pray that God will give us opportunities today to speak the truth boldly. Amen?
