Speak Carefully
“Walk in wisdom toward those [who are] outside, redeeming the time. [Let] your speech always [be] with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Colossians 4:5-6 NKJV)
The way a believer speaks is very important. James says that no man can tame the tongue. However, God can. If you are unable to bridle your tongue, then your religion is useless according to James 1:26. Therefore, give close attention to the things you say.
A believer’s speech is always to be with grace. “You should endeavor so to speak when called, that the hearers may conceive your discourse doth proceed from a gracious spirit, or grace in the heart”—Matthew Poole. This is true but more is involved. Not only should a believer’s speech reflect the gracious act of God in his life, it should also focus on revealing God’s graciousness.
Salt is a flavor enhancer, and so the message we preach should not be bland, but appetizing. What makes the message appetizing? Hunger in this case; Hunger to be free of the bondage of sin and death. Yes your speech is to be gracious, but it is also to be on target revealing the hearer’s sin. It does no good to give a man a coat if he is starving to death. If he needs solid food, then you must give it. Therefore, speak kindly, but give the whole counsel of God. As the passage says believers need to know how they ought to answer people in their given situation.
This is not an easy task. Often trying to open people’s eyes causes them to become protective. Still believers must try, but try carefully always depending on the Lord through prayer and supplication.
If you have been encouraged to witness, do so. However, remember to love the people to whom you preach. Then your words will be gracious and seasoned with salt as the Lord desires.
