The Beginning of Knowledge
“The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, [But] fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7 NKJV)
There must be a solid foundation on which to build knowledge. The most important thing in life is to gain knowledge of the Holy One. To fear Him is to see Him for Who He is. The fear spoken of in this passage is not dread that causes one to hide from an oppressor, but reverential fear that causes one to marvel.
His children see Him as a loving Father. As a Father, He guides and corrects them. The children of such grow in admiration as do children their earthly fathers. Humility is the key to their relationship.
However, fools despise wisdom and instruction. Like a rebellious child running headstrong into trouble, the fool ignores the warnings of the Father. All have been told that God exist for the heavens declare the glory of God (Ps. 19:1). Not only that, but God has shone all what may be known of Him. The following passage is clear.
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown [it] to them.” (Romans 1:18-19 NKJV)
Look at the harmony, like fools that despise wisdom, men suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Truly a fool has said in his heart, “there is no God” (Ps. 53:1).
My dear friend, do not despise the great gift that has been given to you. If you fear the Lord you are truly blessed. Notice the following conversation Peter has with Jesus.
“He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed [this] to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:15-17 NKJV)
Praise God that He has opened blind eyes to see the glorious light of the Gospel. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. What will be known by those who continue in faith? What will be seen by those who see Him face to face? Only that day will tell for no earthly description would do justice.
In the meantime, anticipate that day by discovering new insights about your loving Father. Every glimpse of His glory will call cause you to look for another. Joy will be your constant companion as you explore the endless mercies of our great God and King.
