Undeniable

“And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’" Having said this, He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!"” (Luke 23:46-47 NKJV)

So many people acknowledged Christ’s righteousness it is amazing that the religious but lost of His day were able to look people in the eye and declare Him unrighteous. Only the self-righteous can do such a thing. It would take a hardened-steel-heart forged in the furnace of pride to look upon the Suffering Savior and say crucify Him.

The centurion declared Him righteous, Pilate said he could find no fault with Him, Pilate’s wife called Him righteous, but the scribes and Pharisees hated Him. They feared losing control over the people and their position in life so they plotted to kill Him.

We see the same reaction today. When we take the Gospel to people, they are confronted with their own sinfulness. That is if we declare the true Gospel. Those who have hardened their hearts in self-righteousness react more vociferously than others do towards this undeniable truth.

They cry out crucify Him because their own position dictates His guilt in their minds. If they are righteous, then Christ must not be they say to themselves.

In witnessing encounters, individuals have said, “I won’t believe in a God that allows this suffering or that suffering.” What are they saying, but God is unrighteous and they are righteous enough to declare such nonsense?

The fact is, it doesn’t matter what you say about God, He is righteous and all men are unrighteous. Without the righteousness of Christ imputed to a man’s account, he will perish in a hell designed to punish the devil. And what caused the devil to stumble but pride?

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [How] you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’” (Isaiah 14:12-14 NKJV)

Surely, Lucifer could see how majestic God is. Yet pride filled His heart and He tried to deny the undeniable. The result was devastating to him.

“Those who see you will gaze at you, [And] consider you, [saying: ‘Is] this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, [Who] did not open the house of his prisoners?’ "All the kings of the nations, All of them, sleep in glory, Everyone in his own house; But you are cast out of your grave Like an abominable branch, [Like] the garment of those who are slain, Thrust through with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit, Like a corpse trodden underfoot.” (Isaiah 14:16-19 NKJV)

Do not think it strange when men react to your loving witness. They must react or surrender their pride. This they cannot do, without God’s grace, for then they would condemn themselves.
